On Sunday, September 7th, MathHappens Foundation officially opened the doors to its newest Math Room at the North Country Children’s Museum!
This exciting collaboration is part of MathHappens’ ongoing mission to create accessible, hands-on math experiences in community spaces across the country. The North Country Children’s Museum now joins a growing list of partners bringing math to life in fun, engaging, and surprising ways.
A Morning of Setup and Team Connection
The day began bright and early with a team meet-and-greet. Jordan Varat and Matt Hertel led a morning meeting where museum staff and MathHappens representatives came together to prepare the space and connect in person. The energy was high as everyone shared their enthusiasm and ideas for how this space can grow into a hub of mathematical exploration.
Transforming the Space
After our team meet and greet and training, we set up the physical space with all of our models and activities. As the museum opened its doors, the Math Room quickly came to life. Tables were set with hands-on activities and interactive puzzles. The team worked side by side to make sure everything flowed well in the space and everyone had what they needed. Colorful signage, tactile learning models, and math-inspired fun created an environment that is welcoming, exploratory, and ready to spark curiosity in learners of all ages.
A Warm Welcome to the Community
By mid-morning, families began to arrive and the Math Room was buzzing with activity. Kids (and parents!) dove into math challenges, explored curiosities, and shared smiles as they discovered how fun math can be when it’s experienced through play and exploration.
Museum staff and MathHappens educators were on hand to welcome guests, guide activities, and answer questions. It was clear from the opening: this new space is more than just a room — it’s a community resource, a place for discovery, and a new way to see math in the everyday.
The opening of the Math Room is just the beginning. MathHappens will continue to work with the North Country Children’s Museum to update and evolve the space, ensuring it remains a dynamic part of the museum’s offerings. This Math Room is open every Sunday from 10 AM – 2 PM. See the Contents and Catalog for what’s inside. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, we invite you to stop by, explore the Math Room, and rediscover the joy of math!
