Opening the MathHappens Math Room at the Louisiana Children’s Museum this past weekend on Saturday, November 1st and Sunday, November 2nd was so much fun! Everything came together beautifully.

We started bright and early on Saturday, meeting up with the team to unpack all our models and materials and set up the space. As the museum opened, families began trickling in — slowly at first, but before long, the Math Room was full of excited visitors exploring, discovering, and playing with math.

It was a joy to see children and caregivers alike dive into the hands-on activities and tactile models. Some families spent some extended time in the room, moving from one activity to the next. It was wonderful to watch curiosity take over and see math come to life through play and creativity.

We also want to thank the Louisiana Children’s Museum and our dedicated MathHappens team in Louisiana for their warm welcome, energy, and support. Their efforts make it possible to bring this space to life every weekend, and we’re so grateful to share the Math Room with the community on a consistent basis.

Día de Muertos Math Activity

Since our opening weekend coincided with Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) on November 1st, we featured a special themed math activity! Visitors could design their own skull faces by choosing from different combinations of eyes, forehead gems, and mouths – a combinatorics challenge brought to life in a fun, artistic way.

After choosing their combinations, participants created rubbings to take home their unique designs. It turned out to be a hit with guests of all ages — a beautiful blend of math, creativity, and cultural celebration.

We can’t wait to continue sharing math in creative, meaningful ways at the Louisiana Children’s Museum every weekend. If you’re in the area, come visit the MathHappens Math Room — explore, play, and see how math truly happens everywhere!
