Did you know MathHappens has 7 Math Rooms across 4 states? In this post, we hear from Monique Harrison, Ed.S about the Benjamin Banneker Math Room at the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM).

“This space is more than just a place to explore mathematics—it is a vibrant community hub where children, parents, and educators come together to engage with math in a way that is meaningful, hands-on, and culturally relevant.

The Math Room has not only provided students with access to enriching experiences but also sparked powerful connections between educators and families, creating opportunities that extend far beyond the walls of the space. Through these interactions, we’ve witnessed the joy of discovery, the empowerment that comes with mathematical confidence, and the strengthening of a network committed to educational equity.

NAAM has seamlessly integrated the Benjamin Banneker Math Room into its educational programming, further amplifying its impact. NAAM has created a dedicated webpage on its website and developed press releases to uplift this initiative, ensuring that even more students and families have access to these transformative experiences.

This initiative has reinforced my belief in the power of community-driven learning. Seeing students’ excitement as they engage with math in new ways and hearing from parents about how these experiences have inspired their children affirms the importance of making math accessible, engaging, and inclusive. Thanks to MathHappens and the support of NAAM, this vision continues to grow, opening doors to even more possibilities for learners of all ages.”

Thank you to Monique, the Math Room facilitators, and the staff at NAAM for such an incredible partnership!
