Sunday Funday means hands on activities at the Neill-Cochran House Museum in Austin, TX and MathHappens was the invited program on Sunday March 9, 2025. On special exhibit currently, but also part of the regular collection… Quilts!!. This museum invites visitors to “step into Austin History” and the quilt collection is a visitor favorite. Paul Cato, Communications Director at the museum was really pleased with the activity. “Quilting is really difficult to offer as an activity for all ages, but this really works!”
Veteran intern Ella Basken brought our wooden Truchet tiles designed and produced by Melissa Wilkinson and Joran Varat in our Austin workshop. Interns Garrett Smith and Dominic Gonzalez were part of the prep team. There were larger wooden frames for grand designs and mini cardboard frames to take home. Some tiles were colored and others were blank. The creativity that emerged was really inspiring! We are excited add this activity to our math rooms…. it’s a winner!
The tile originally studied by Truchet is split along the diagonal into two triangles of contrasting colors. The tile has four possible orientations.
Ella noted that it’s important to bring extra supplies because people want to make more than one.
