On Thursday, November 13, we were thrilled to welcome a group of enthusiastic fifth- and sixth-grade students from Kirby Hall School in Austin, Texas for a hands-on field trip filled with curiosity, creativity, and discovery.
The visit began with an open exploration session using our Open Play Kit, giving students a chance to dive into math concepts through playful, creative activities. These kits always spark imagination, and the Kirby Hall students were quick to experiment, build, and problem-solve together.

After the warm-up, we split the students into smaller groups and rotated them through a series of interactive stations.
Pool Testing & Math Illusions
Upstairs, we led a pooled testing demonstration that showed students how math and measurement play a role in real-world testing. The goal is that the pooled test can give more test results using less lab chemicals and reducing time. We also introduced them to several math illusions, and sent everyone home with a “Which is Larger” giveaway.
Laser Cutting Demonstration
Downstairs, students got an exciting look at our laser cutter in action. We created custom logo puzzles featuring both the Kirby Hall and MathHappens logos. Many students shared that while they have access to a Glowforge at their school, they had never seen a laser with such a large bed size or high wattage. They were amazed by both the speed and the precision of the cuts—this station definitely earned a lot of “wow” moments!

Linkages Activity
At another rotation station, students learned how to build and experiment with linkages, discovering how simple parts can create complex motion. This hands-on activity encouraged creativity and offered insight into the mechanics behind how linkages work, and what you can do with them.
3-D Printing & Our Model Library
We also showcased our 3-D printer and print station, explaining how we design models and where our ideas originate. Students were curious about the process from concept to completed print, and they enjoyed getting a close-up look at the machines in action.

Overall, it was a fantastic field trip filled with energy, engagement, and thoughtful questions. We truly enjoyed hosting the Kirby Hall students and watching them dive into math and making with enthusiasm.
We look forward to continuing to support schools and provide hands-on learning experiences that bring math to life!
