We took a “Maker” approach at STEM SantaFe’s camp this week. Students experimented with different ways to make a moveable joint using a variety of materials: balloon pieces, tin foil, brads, rubber band and even the wax paper bag the materials came in.
- We didn’t plan to make pinwheels!
- Bent Brad
- Playing with shapes
- Adding tension
- Working with tinfoil
- Long chain of segments
- Five different joints: brad, balloon, rubber band, tinfoil and paper bag
- Combination balloon and brad.
- Golden rectangle and golden caliper
- Using the Calipers
Creative ideas included bending the brads to make tension, combining brads with balloons. We also made 3 sets of calipers: 1:1, 1:2 and 1:1.618 and a variety of creative shapes. The building kit parts are 2″ and 2 x 1.618 so they can be used to make a golden rectangle.
