On February 18, MathHappens was honored to participate in the “100 Years of Black History” celebration at the Center of Black Student Excellence in Long Beach, CA.
Throughout the day, students from across Long Beach Unified School District rotated through stations celebrating history, culture, and achievement. Our station was the Benjamin Banneker Math Room, facilitated by me and Yana Mohanty, founder of Geometiles.
In addition to hands-on mathematical exploration, we shared about who Benjamin Banneker was — a self-taught mathematician, astronomer, and surveyor who played a key role in surveying Washington, D.C., and published widely read almanacs in the late 1700s. His life stands as a powerful example of intellectual brilliance, perseverance, and the deep history of Black excellence in mathematics.

We brought out Geometiles, Bubble Tiles, and 21st Century Pattern Blocks — materials from our Open Play Kit that invite building, pattern-making, and big ideas. Students dove right in. They constructed intricate designs, bold geometric structures, and colorful patterns that stretched across tables. The room buzzed with energy, creativity, and joy!

We are grateful to the Benjamin Banneker Association for connecting us with Dr. Spencer and making this collaboration possible. Partnerships like these allow us to create math experiences that honor history while celebrating the brilliance of students today. And thank you to the Center of Black Student Excellence for welcoming us. We look forward to continuing to build, explore, and celebrate mathematics together.
